Genealogy Social Networks Part 2

Onto RootsWeb powered by Ancestry.com πŸ™‚ I would say that this is probably one of the very top Genealogy/Heraldry sites out there and free to sign up to check it out with an upgrade option. You can sign up at RootsWeb.com, Ancestry.com, or MyFamily.com to create a site for your family to keep up with events, what’s new, photo’s, video’s, and a big bonus feature of sharing uploaded files! That is a very nice feature here πŸ™‚ And, of course, create a family tree πŸ™‚ This site is a bit different in that it’s focus seems to be photos and it allows site tagging or keywords.

Most Genealogy Family sites allow for private or public settings and MyFamily.com has this feature as well.

MyHeritage.com also has the choice of public or private sites with the click of a button. My Heritage has a video and photo area, a family tree creation section, and the “big Star” here (when it is completed) is the calendar! Much like a Google type Calendar system to include all of the family events! In the new video and photo sections of My Heritage, they have included the bonus of photo tagging much like Facebook has. As photos are entered, others can “tag” a photo with a person. Like, this photo is of Randy Ferris πŸ™‚ Neato!

OliveTreeGenealogy.com is your link to the past if you are hunting for your American or Canadian ancestors or your Immigrant ancestors. Free searchable genealogy transcriptions are at your fingertips at Olive Tree Genealogy created by Lorine McGinnis Shulze. Easy to navigate with helpful tutorials to get you your information from the site and help if your new to Genealogy! Thanks Lorine!

US-Census.org/search.html Search all transcriptions by State, Year, or Keyword. This is a must visit site for Genealogy family History buffs πŸ™‚ While searching for ancestors the census information will be a bit limited but a great starting point or a great place to get “leads” to other branches n your tree.

Libraries of States like the NY State Library site. These type sites are Internet bibliographies; housing biographies, Genealogy Resources, Cemetary info, Census links, and much more relevant to the region especially.

From the Yahoo or Google search directories, type in US State Libraries. I have done that for you here and you can arrive directly at that search term by clicking the links here.

Or, visit PublicLibraries.com for State Library links. Valuable links for Family Tree Creators and Genealogy History seekers!

I am not a huge fan of the standard “Bookmark” system on the PC, I use it, but actually locating my saved sites after a while, well… let’s say … I generally lose them lol πŸ™‚

I came up with a way to house and remember what links go to which sites πŸ™‚ Use a free blog platform (I use Wetpaint.com) to hold all of the sites on a particular topic (like Genealogy). If you have a screen capture device this works best because you can hyper-link the photo to the cooresponding site but now you have a visual of the site you saved to better remember where you are going and actually why you saved that site at all. This too gives any visitors to your newly created “storage” blog or site the helpful advantage of not having to go searching for these “on topic” sites. Here they are! Anytime I research a given topic, if it is a big one, I create a wiki to house it all πŸ™‚

One more Genealogy post to come in this series guys πŸ™‚
